History

In 2001, TopSource began as a not-for-resale (NFR) division growing out of the supply chain area within Ahold USA, an entity of Royal Ahold NV. The objective of this newly formed group was to aggregate the NFR spend of Ahold’s six separate operating companies.

In 2003, the NFR division became a separate Ahold owned company and was renamed BrainTree Sourcing LLC. This enabled pursuit of customers external to Ahold. Soon after, a large food service distributor was signed as the company’s first major customer.

In 2006, BrainTree Sourcing divested from Ahold to Topco Associates LLC as a wholly-owned subisdiary, and became TopSource LLC. The new division was charged with managing all NFR activity for Topco as well as Topco legacy programs - for resale programs already in place at Topco. Ahold USA and its operating companies was retained as customers of TopSource.

In 2007, TopSource surpassed $1 billion in NFR spend under management. In 2008 the company realized a record a 23% growth, and a 9% growth in 2009.

TopSource’s parent company, Topco Associates LLC, located in Skokie IL, specializes in aggregating the multi-billion dollar purchases of its members and customers in the procurement of a broad range of products and services in the areas of private label, perishables, not-for-resale, and national brands. Topco manages $150 billion in spend and is the second largest U.S. food retailer.
